Skeletonema marinoi

Species biology: Skeletonema is a cosmopolitan genus of centric diatoms with eleven species reported. S. marinoi is an important primary producer in the N Atlantic and a valuable food source for zooplankton. It is especially abundant during spring bloom, when densities of million of cells per litre is reported. The predominant mean of propagation is through vegetative division, but the formation of auxospores and sexual reproduction has been documented. The mitotic generation time is short, with approximately one division per day. It has a benthic resting stage, and up to 50 000 propagules per gram of sediment can be found. 

Rationale for genome sequencing: Generation time is 24 hours which makes it ideal for studies of phenotypic response. Benthic cells act as a resting stage, and can survive for at least hundred years and provide a short-term evolutionary archive in sediments. S. marinoi is easy to collect, isolate, and maintain in culture, and the survival of monoclonal cultures after single cell isolation is almost 100% .
